About the Guide
The aim of The Gambia Travel Guide is to provide visitors with a comprehensive picture of this beautiful country.
The Republic of The Gambia is ideal for the European sunseeker being approximately 6 hours flying time from all major airports and sitting on the Greenwich Mean Time Line. Its guaranteed sunshine (30C+) is perfect for a relaxing break and for the more adventurous amongst you the country offers an excellent array of birdlife, empty golden beaches, awesome oyster laden creeks, fantastic river excursions, sporting activities, historical and cultural tours, top class restaurants and of course shopping for a vast choice of local artifacts.
Tourist numbers to The Gambia are increasing on a yearly basis but thankfully this has not spoilt the indigenous beauty of the country.
The author of the Guide, Andy Robinson, worked in The Gambia in the 80s and has travelled back to the country every year since. This has allowed him to develop The Guide through his own experiences.
The Guide includes information on geography, history, taxis, language, birdlife, telephone system, currency, food, religion and places to visit. It also includes tips and an insight into the ethos of the country that will make time spent in The Gambia even more enjoyable.

Shops and supermarkets NO BARTERING
Local markets BARTERING ESSENTIAL. When going market shopping have a price set in your mind and DON'T deviate from it. If the stallholder won't budge, just walk away and 9 times out of 10 he/she will come after you and settle on your price. (About 1/4 of his first price is a guide)
The local Beer is Julbrew which is very much like Becks.
When tipping remember that wages in The Gambia are low; basic hotel staff D1000 - D1500 per month.
...and many more.
